Machine Plays

so "machine plays" were pretty hip around the 17th century. The pompous French of the time, including Louis XIV, enjoyed these spectacles thanks to Torelli's chariot and pole invention (bad diagram -->). Set transitions were mechanized, which required less manpower and resulted in a very unique artistic style. You can get an awesome but extreme taste of this in the movie The Adventures of Baron Munchausen directed by Terry Gilliam (Monty Python, Brazil). Round 3:30 min the play-within-a-play thing sets off. It's a way cool visual affect that has a big influence on the way the think of theater and its potential so I hope you enjoy.
